EarDub

Dub YouTube videos on your Android phone

The EarDub YouTube dubbing extension works on Android too. Chrome for Android cannot run extensions, so you use it in Vivaldi, a free browser from Google Play that installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store. Setup takes a few minutes, once.

What you need

  • An Android phone or tablet with Google Play.
  • Vivaldi 8.2 or newer (free).
  • A YouTube video with captions; automatic captions count.
  • An EarDub account, created when you first tap Dub. The free plan includes 30 minutes a day.

How to set up the YouTube dubbing extension on Android

  1. 1

    Install Vivaldi from Google Play

Chrome for Android cannot run extensions, but Vivaldi can. It is a free, Chromium-based browser from Google Play; you need version 8.2 or newer, the first to install extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

  2. 2

Add EarDub to Vivaldi from the Chrome Web Store

Open the EarDub page of the Chrome Web Store in Vivaldi (the green button on this page does it). On a phone the store offers Add to Desktop, which cannot install, and Vivaldi shows a bar at the bottom: Extensions can only be installed on the desktop site. Tap Use desktop site, then tap the reload button next to the address bar. The store reloads in its desktop layout, which is cramped on a phone: tap the blue Add to Vivaldi button on the left (pinch to zoom out if it is cut off) and confirm. Ignore the other extensions the store suggests on the right.

  3. 3

Open a YouTube video and switch Desktop site off

Go to youtube.com in Vivaldi and open a video with captions; if YouTube suggests its app, stay in the browser. Desktop site is still on, so YouTube opens its desktop layout: tap the V menu at the top right, scroll down and untick Desktop site. YouTube reloads in its phone layout. The store page hides this option, which is why you switch it off here.

  4. 4

    Allow EarDub on YouTube once

Tap the green EarDub icon next to the address bar; the puzzle icon beside it lists your extensions too. In the EarDub menu, tap Allow on YouTube. The page reloads straight away, with no further prompt. You only do this once: YouTube's phone site is a different address from the desktop one.

  5. 5

Tap the dub button on the video

A green button with a sound-wave icon now sits at the top-left of the player, labelled in your dubbing language (Dub in English). Tap it, sign in the first time (free), and the video plays with an AI voice in your language, in step with the picture. Tap it again for the original audio.

Tips for dubbed YouTube on a phone

  • Subtitles are sized for phones (15 px by default). Change it from the EarDub menu: tap the puzzle icon, then EarDub.
  • To keep the speaker's own voice faintly underneath, raise the original volume in the same menu.
  • Videos you find in the YouTube app open in the app. Share → Copy link, then paste the link into Vivaldi.
  • Headphones help: the dub replaces the original voice, and you hear every word in a noisy place.

Questions about EarDub on Android

Can I use EarDub in the YouTube app?

No. The YouTube app does not let other apps add features to it, so EarDub works on the YouTube website inside Vivaldi. To watch a video you found in the app, tap Share, copy the link and paste it into Vivaldi's address bar.

Why not Chrome for Android?

Chrome for Android does not support extensions at all; opening the Chrome Web Store there shows that extensions are not available on your device. Vivaldi for Android, also built on Chromium, added Chrome Web Store extensions in version 8.2 (September 2026).

Which Android browser allows Chrome extensions?

Vivaldi for Android installs extensions straight from the Chrome Web Store, and it is the browser we test EarDub on. Firefox for Android has its own add-on store, where EarDub is not available yet.

Does EarDub work on iPhone?

Not yet. Browsers on iPhone, including Chrome and Vivaldi, cannot run Chrome extensions. On an iPhone, use EarDub on a computer for now.

Is it the same account and free minutes as on my computer?

Yes. Sign in with the same account and your plan, free minutes and settings like the dub language apply on the phone too. The free plan includes 30 minutes of dubbing a day.

Which videos can be dubbed?

Videos with captions, including YouTube's automatic ones. EarDub translates the captions and reads them aloud, so a video with no captions at all has nothing to dub.
